2010 Year 13 Productions

Year 13 produced both Purapurawhetu by Briar Grace Smith and Waiora by Hone Kouka. These are two iconic NZ plays explore themes around family, belonging, land and NZ society. Students were aiming at creating convincing, believable roles while deepening their understanding of Maori culture. Tamati Patuwai helped with this understanding and directed students in the use of haka and waiata. Without his generous assistance we could not have performed these two powerful plays.

I am immensely proud of the standard of performance the students were able to achieve, and that we were able to do justice to these powerful stories. Well done to all involved it has been a great pleasure.

Summerfest 2010

Summerfest was a great success in the last week of February. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather most lunchtimes and all students were able to either be involved or support the events in painting panels for the Art department building , drama and  theatre sports, impromptu debates,  or musical items from various soloists, small groups, Stage and Concert Bands.  Well done to all students and staff involved and thank you to all parents who supported the event.

Arts Awards 2009

The college celebrated excellence in The Arts at the annual Arts Awards Evening recently.  The guest speaker was Tamati  Patuwai who gave an inspirational speech about the place of drama in his own life. The evening began with an extract from Patrick Spillane’s  cleverly written  play, “Wills Twins”, performed by a small group of Year 12 students. Musical performances were given by Holly Dennison, David McGregor, and Bradley Craig. A dramatic monologue on aspects of the life of Sir Edmund Hillary was devised and performed  by Edmund Boyes.   Selected folio boards on display from the Art Department provided another opportunity for student work to be appreciated. Arts Leaders, Bradley Craig and Ally Thomson, provided entertaining continuity for the evening which was well attended and enjoyed by all.

O.U.T.  Spells OUT!

This play was successfully performed over two nights as the students' "perform an acting role" and "perform a technical role" to achieve NCEA credits. They all worked extremely hard to design and create the world of this interesting play, set in three time periods in two different countries and at sea! Apart from their incredible ingenuity and hard work, they demonstrated a generosity of spirit when supporting each other towards success.

The students created interesting and believable roles. It was the best year 11 production in terms of line learning! They looked great, sounded great and enjoyed every minute of it! Well done to you all.
