Graphics - Course Information

Year 9
Graphics is a half year option.  The course is designed to gives students both a taste of what to expect at NCEA, and some foundation skills.  Formal 2D and 3D freehand drawing is taught to give students the confidence to communicate their ideas clearly.  A range of instrumental drawing is also taught to familiarise students with the various techniques used throughout industry.  Subject specific vocabulary is developed so students can justify their design decisions.  Students apply these skills to a range of projects.

Year 10

The year 10 Graphics programme is a full year option. The course equips students with a range of graphics skills and is designed to prepare students for future NCEA Graphics program. Students are assessed through projects that they undertake covering the following three design areas:
  • Architectural Design
  • Technological design
  • Graphic Communication and Design

 Year 11

The year 11 course is designed to prepare students for the internally and externally assessed Achievement Standards.  These standards allow students to gain NCEA credits in the Level 1 in Graphics programme. Students will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the year which are designed to improve student skills in the graphics curriculum objectives, communication, problem solving, self management, work and study. The year 11 programme includes design briefs based on realistic and thought provoking situations. They are intended to encourage and challenge students to achieve to the best of their ability. Topics covered at this level are from the following design areas:
  • Architectural / Environmental Design
  • Technological / Engineering Design
  • Media Design / Technical Illustration

Year 12

The year 12 course is designed to prepare students for the internally and externally assessed Achievement Standards.  These standards allow students to gain NCEA credits in the Level 2 in Graphics programme. Students will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the year which are designed to improve student skills in the graphics curriculum objectives, communication, problem solving, self management, work and study. The year 12 programme includes design briefs based on realistic and thought provoking situations. They are intended to encourage and challenge students to achieve to the best of their ability. Topics covered at this level are from the following design areas:
  • Architectural / Environmental Design
  • Technological / Engineering Design
  • Media Design / Technical Illustration

Year 13

The year 13 course is designed to prepare students for the internally and externally assessed Achievement Standards.  These standards allow students to gain NCEA credits in the Level 3 in Graphics programme for the National Certificate in Educational Achievement. Students will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the year which are designed to improve their skills in the Graphics curriculum objectives, communication, problem solving, self management, work and study. A major focus this year will be preparing for entry to tertiary courses and the compilation of suitable portfolios to meet entry requirements for tertiary institutions.
  • Architectural / Environmental Design
  • Engineering / Technological design
  • Media / Technical Illustration

Graphics - Assessment

Year 9:
Formal assessment will be done on the following projects.

Pop-Up Greeting Card
Cinema Popcorn Package

To complete the projects successfully, students follow a design process.  This allows students to logically solve the design problem.

Year 10:
Formal assessment will be done on the following projects.

Project 1 – Chocolate Box Design (Technological design)
Project 2 – Camera Design (Graphic Communication and Design)
Project 3 – Church Re-design (Architectural Design)

To complete the projects successfully, students follow a design process.  This allows students to logically solve the design problem.
