Year 12:
Pattern drafting –basic skirt and trouser block, pattern adaptations
Garment assembly (industry method)
Fashion sketching
Sample work on construction techniques
Design and make garments
History of costumes – prehistoric and ancient Egypt
Study a designer
The fashion industry – types and designing a collection.
Fibre studies and fabric constructions
Common fabric types and their suitability to garment design and their sewing requirements.

Year 13:
In-depth study of a designer
Nature of Clothing & Fashion -Why and who change fashion, fashion cycles, classics and fads
Resourceful use of material –applied design, recycling
Formal garment construction and evaluations
Fashion drawing
Design and make a textile item for a specific purpose e.g. a quilt.
Pattern drafting- draft basic block for the top bodice including fitting , pattern adaptations
Design & make outfits for various competitions e.g., Recycling Revolutions, Young Designer Fashion Award, Trash to - Fashion


Soft Materials Technology/Fashion Design - Assessment

Year 10:

  • Demonstrate the safe use & operation of a range of sewing equipment.

  • Develop and test an outcome through modification and adaptation.

  • Produce a technological solution using technological practice.

  • Review the outcome in relation to intentions and agreed criteria.

  • The impact of changing technologies on society.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of knowledge of materials.

  • Year 11:
    Practical and written assessments as per unit standards, project work as per technology achievement standards

    US6678 Use a commercial pattern
    US6682 Construct and evaluate an unstructured woven garment
    Techology AS 1.1 Develop a technological solution to address a given brief
    Techology AS 1.5 Demonstrate understanding of technological knowledge
    Techology AS 1.6 Present a technological solution that addresses the requirements of a brief

    Year 12:
    1 hour practical test, 2 x 1hr written tests, assignments, pattern and sample work, garments, written assessments as per unit standards

    US6684 Demonstrate technique of flat pattern making and develop a garment from a basic block
    US6692 Prepare for and construct a leisure garment
    US5302 Cut single ply material by shears for the clothing industry
    US1540 Set up, adjust and operate a domestic lockstitch sewing machine

    US6691 Construct a lined skirt

    3 Modules of course work  will be assessed using achievement-based assessessment for the AUT University award

    Year 13:

    These garments are designed and made by Year 12 and 13 Fashion and Design students. They are designed,  made and modelled by the same students except for Wendy Wang, her garment was modelled by Julia Hagen.
