Carpentry and Furniture - Course Information

Year 12:
This course leads on from the Career Pathways pre-apprenticeship course.  Both Unit Standards and Achievement Standards are attempted.  To gain the Unit Standards a student must complete a range of unit workbooks, end of unit tests, and two practical projects:

  • Router table
  • Folding beach chair.
  • The emphasis of the Unit Standards is to teach students basic woodworking skills using power tools from the following range:

  • Cordless drills
  • Jig saws
  • Band saw
  • Routers
  • Orbital sanders and belt sanders
  • The Achievement Standards are aimed at stretching students’ abilities and application of skills.  They must follow good Technological Practice to solve the problem of displaying an object.  For instance, a photograph or prized All Blacks rugby jersey once warn by Daniel Carter.  They must write a design brief and specification, engage in research activities that will help them understand the problem fully, produce design ideas, develop their design ideas, construct the design and finally evaluate their artefact against the design brief and specification.  This substantial body of work is presented by means of a portfolio or visual diary.
