Year 11 NCEA

  • Prerequisites/ Minimum entry
    -Students must have shown a positive attitude towards Physical Education during years 9 and 10.
    -Effort and grade for year 10 Physical Education reports must be B grade or better.
    -Discretion of the teacher

  • Course Content
    -To acquire knowledge and understanding about the contribution of physical activity to a healthy lifestyle.
    -To participate in a wide range of physical activities.
    -To develop an understanding of the factors that contributes to and affects skilled physical performance.
    -To develop skills in a group situation ( team work, co-operation, leadership and motivation)

Physical Education - Assessment

Year 11 NZEA
The course will be assessed to the N.C.E.A level one Physical Education Achievement Standards. Five Units will be presented to the class with the total obtainable credits equalling 24.

Each Unit has a range of practical and theory based work, which requires 100 % participation. Students are expected to bring their equipment (both practical and theory) for every lesson.

1.1: Participate in Physical activities and describe how this influenced hauroa/ well being. 40 lessons (5 credits, Internal).
· Allocated lessons, 30 practical/ 10 theory
· Activities used: International Games (Aussie Rules, American Football & Ultimate Frisbee)
· Aquatics, using either Sacred Heart pool or Glenn Innes Y.M.C.A pool
· Minor Games
· Students are required to keep an activity log book
· End of Unit concludes with a one hour exam

1.2: Demonstrate knowledge of the body structure and function in the performance of a physical activity. 43 periods (6 credits, Internal)
· Students will look at how the body works and relate it to sport and movement
· A ratio of 60% theory and 40% practical
· Unit will look at Anatomy of the body (muscles and bones)
· The Cardiovascular system
· The Principals of training relating to students own sports and keeping a training logbook.
· Human biomechanics
· This Unit is concluded with a one hour exam

1.3: Demonstrate and describe the quality of movement in a physical activity. 24 periods (5 credits, Internal).
· 18 practical, 6 theory
· Skill based unit which picks a particular sport and focuses on technique and improvement
· Gymnastics is the preferred sport used for this unit
· Assessment is a practical assessment which involves 3 tasks:
        Task 1: involves videotaping yourself performing a sequence in a class setting prior to extra practise
        Task 2: involves you videotaping your self again performing the sequence in a class setting after 4 class periods of practise.
        Task 3: is a homework task using your videotape performance and critically analysing changes and improvements.

1.4: Explore how the body in Physical activity is portrayed. 20 periods (4 credits. Internal)
· To understand the impact of body image on Hauora (well being)
· Look at strategies for building self esteem and positive body image
· Identify realistic images of self and others
· Identify the influences the media and others have on self esteem and confidence
· Challenge stereotypes
· Students will be assessed on a class presentation, oral presentation and visual presentation.

1.5: Use strategies to develop interpersonal skills in a group or team. (4 credits, Internal)
· Students will be divided into groups and will rotate roles that are involved within a sports team
        - Team coach/Trainer
        - Team strategy/planner
        - Team captain
        - Team member
        - Team manager
        - Umpire/Referee
· Students rotate roles

Year 12
The course will be assessed using N.C.E.A level two Physical Education Achievement Standards. Seven Units will be presented to the class with the total obtainable credits equalling 23.

Physical Education - Events

A compulsory 5 day trip to Pakiri Beach takes place in March each year. The students participate in Horse Riding, Snorkelling, Surf Survival, Bush Craft, Tramping, Adventure Based Learning and Fitness Training sessions.
