INTRODUCTION
Glendowie College offers an outstanding variety of subjects and levels for all students to select from. Each student’s subjects should be carefully considered to ensure each student is studying in a course relevant to their needs and suited to their ability, and staff advice is available.

Detailed criteria and descriptions of each subject and level are provided in the annual Course Description booklets for each year level.

No decision of subjects or levels by international students is required or advised prior to their arrival at the College, only an indication of possible subjects may be requested.

YEARS 9 AND 10
At these levels all students study the core national curriculum subject requirements in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Technology and Physical Education. At the Year 9 level there are also core requirements in Art, Music and Health.

The balance of the Years 9 and 10 programmes is through the selection of option subjects. There are a wide variety of option subjects available to select from, with each student being required to select two options in Year 9 and two options at the Year 10 level.

The College also offers an Advanced Learner/Enrichment and a Learning Assistance Programme. Students are carefully identified to participate in these programmes.
The College offers a programme to support students to become independent, confident, connected and life-long learners.

THE SENIOR SCHOOL
The final three years of high school at Glendowie College provides a wide variety of subjects and levels for senior students, It is possible for a student to study across year levels (multi-level studies) if wished.

This means a student is able to select and study subjects at Years 11, 12 and 13 levels in the same year. Most students however select their subjects from one year level to gain and complete the national qualification at that level. Students are required to attain a specified level of achievement in a subject before they are permitted to advance to the next level in that subject or a similar one.

YEAR 11
All students must do a course in English (English or English for Speakers of Other Languages) and
Mathematics (Mathematics or Mathematics Applied). Science is strongly recommended. An English Second Language student is not however required to study English at Year 11 level unless they are of good English language ability.

Most students study five academic subjects, although the most able students may study six academic subjects. The national qualification at this level is the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 1.

YEAR 12
All students must do a course in English or Te Reo Maori. An English Second Language student is not
required to study English at Year 12 level unless they are of good English language ability.

Most students study six subjects and are encouraged to select subjects relevant to their career aspirations and further study. The national qualification at this level is The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 2.

YEAR 13
Students usually study five subjects at this level. Subjects taken reflect a student’s interest and aspirations for further study, usually at the University or Polytechnic degree or diploma level.

The national qualification at this level is The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3. Students wishing to enter a New Zealand University must pass entrance standards established by The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and the New Zealand University Council. Students are also invited to participate in the Scholarship programme.
