From the day it first opened its doors in 1961, Glendowie College has had the advantage of being a relatively small school in comparison with the many other Auckland state co-educational secondary schools.

This continues to be reflected in the close relationships between staff, students, parents and community, all working collaboratively towards common goals.

The NZ Herald publication The Aucklander recently wrote :
"If you’re looking for a school that excels in all areas, Glendowie College has got it covered. For a school considered relatively small, Glendowie College has attained many honours, achieving highly academically, sportingly and culturally across regional and national levels."

Each year students are achieving well above the national average in external examinations. The music groups continue to perform with considerable success in regional and national competitions. One the highlights being the school’s concert band invitation to perform at various locations in Melbourne during the Commonwealth Games. The College has also achieved sporting success with many current and former students receiving Regional & New Zealand representative honours in a variety of sports.

The most recent Education Review Office report (2005) recognized Glendowie College as a provider of high quality education, pointing out the quality support & attention provided by staff for student achievement as a significant strength of the school.
