Farewell Mr Stephen Grainger

Following an 8 year commitment to the Board of Trustees Stephen Grainger leaves the trusteeship role.  A former student in the 1970s and later a parent of the college, Stephen became Board Chair in 2007.  During this time, Stephen has served on all board committees, has overseen roll growth and progress in several developments at the college including an ambitious property programme that has provided an enhanced learning environment for all students.  An important priority for the college while he has been Chairperson has been the raising of overall achievement and ensuring that the education provided responds to and respects student needs.

We acknowledge and thank Stephen for the significant commitment and contribution he has made to the ongoing future development of the college and hope he will continue to have an interest in its progress.

Mr Stephen Grainger

Ms Dawn Garbett – Parent Elected Trustee, member of the Finance and Human Resources Committees

“I am a teacher educator at the University of Auckland.  I am married to a physical education teacher educator.  We met while teaching at Selwyn College 20 years ago.  We have two children - our son left Glendowie in 2009 and our daughter will leave in 2012.  I strongly support the New Zealand curriculum and believe that NCEA is a world-class assessment system.  As a Parent Elected Trustee, my responsibility is to ensure that Glendowie College provides high quality education for every student.  I am pleased that Education Review Office recognised our combined efforts.”

Mr Shayne Blake – Parent Elected Trustee, member of the Finance and Property Committees

“I am proud to be actively involved in Glendowie College through my role as a trustee.  There are many challenges faced by the Principal and her management team to meet the needs of all stakeholders and deliver excellent education outcomes, and it is a privilege to be part of the governance team which supports the senior leadership team to achieve this.  With two children at the school, I find the added insight about the education system and the workings of the school that comes from being a trustee both interesting and useful.  I would encourage other parents to take the opportunity to be similarly involved.”

Ms Jeanette Bell – Teacher Elected Trustee, member of the Property and Finance Committees

Photography teacher Jeanette Bell is the staff representative on the Board.  She is a long serving senior teacher and is involved in many aspects of the college including being the teacher with library responsibilities, photographer at school events, and liaising with the outside community on events such as the powhiri held to welcome new students and staff.  Jeanette is also responsible for producing images for the website and the annual school magazine.

Ms Taotao Li – Student Elected Trustee

“A Year 13 student at Glendowie College, I am Deputy Head Girl with involvement in the Concert Band, Debating, Cross Country, Road Running and the Senior Girls Touch Rugby Team.  I have witnessed the plethora of opportunities that this College has offered.  I believe that these opportunities are rights given to every student and a lot of effort has gone into enabling this.  I do not have any experience with governance and management, but it is what I hope to gain by being on the Board.  I believe that it is a selfless role – to ensure the betterment of the school community – and I will do my best to contribute to the development of the school.  I am very proud to be a student at Glendowie College.”
